Carn Ban Chambered Cairn

One of the most famous Neolithic long cairns in the southwest of Scotland, Carn Ban is an elongated burial cairn in a wooded setting. Although it is a place of great interest it is not the most convenient to reach, taking a 4 mile walk through a wooded area. The cairn can be reached from one of two places; from a signed trail at Lagg, just east of Torrylin cairn, or from Whiting Bay, where a signed trail leads to Glenashdale Falls. If you keep on the forestry plantation trail past the waterfall you will eventually reach the cairn.

The cairn dates back thousands of years and is in a style known as a Clyde cairn. It has an intricate structure with different passages and compartment which would have been used for many activities including burial and burning of bodies; remains of human bones have been found there. Despite its age, Carn Ban is remarkably well-preserved and is one of Arran's most complete remaining cairns.
