From Brick to Building: Mount Stuart's Development

24th June 2025

Every effort has been made to verify the accuracy of the event information but we recommend contacting the event organisers before attending.

To mark 30 years of public opening of Mount Stuart House & Gardens, this exhibition explores the estate’s architectural evolution. From origins at Rothesay Castle to its transformation into the iconic neo-Gothic masterpiece shaped by the visionary 3rd Marquess of Bute. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to view archival materials - many on public display for the first time - including original drawings, photographs, and design documents that offer insight into the creative process behind Mount Stuart. The exhibition is included as part of a standard House & Gardens ticket. Access is via self-guided entry during normal opening hours, with tours bookable online. Architectural talks will also be hosted by Lynsey Nairn, offering further insight into archival items not on general display. These will take place July 16, August 15. This exhibition forms a key part of Mount Stuart Trust’s ongoing efforts to make the Bute Collection and its architectural significance more widely accessible – engaging with local communities, school groups, heritage enthusiasts and first-time visitors alike.
