Paint the Town Tartan: Isle of Bute Tartan Festival Returns This May. The Isle of Bute is set to come alive in colour, creativity, and community spirit as the Isle of Bute Tartan Festival returns from 15th – 17th May, inviting locals and visitors alike to “Paint the Town Tartan.” Building on the success of previous years, this year’s festival promises a lively mix of tradition, fun, and participation, with something for all ages to enjoy. The heart of the festival is simple: get involved, wear your tartan, and be part of it. Across the weekend, Rothesay will be filled with activity—from friendly competitions and live music to family gatherings and spontaneous moments of celebration. A highlight of the weekend will be the festival parade, bringing colour and energy through the town as individuals, groups, and businesses come together dressed in their finest tartans. Everyone is encouraged to take part, whether walking, dancing, or simply showing up in style. For those who enjoy a bit of competition, there will be plenty to get involved in. The Best Dressed in Tartan competition will celebrate creativity and flair, while a festival photo competition invites people to capture the spirit of the weekend—whether it’s a quiet moment, a burst of colour, or the joy of people coming together. With other competitions over the weekend too. Music will play a central role throughout the festival. The amphitheatre will host live performances, creating a vibrant backdrop for the weekend, while local pubs will come alive with informal music sessions, offering a warm and welcoming space to gather, listen, and join in. Families are at the heart of the festival, and this year sees the return of a family ceilidh at Bute Yard, designed to be relaxed, inclusive, and full of fun. There will be a variety of family-friendly activities and games, ensuring there is something for everyone to take part in and have fun. Local businesses and venues will also be joining in, helping to create a shared atmosphere across the island. From shop windows to street corners, the aim is to see Bute filled with tartan in all its forms. Organisers are encouraging everyone—residents, visitors, groups, and businesses—to take part in whatever way they can. Whether it’s dressing up, entering a competition, playing music, or simply coming along to enjoy the atmosphere, every contribution helps make the festival what it is. The Isle of Bute Tartan Festival continues to grow as a celebration of creativity, heritage, and community. At its core, it’s about people coming together, sharing in something positive, and creating moments that will be remembered long after the weekend ends. So, mark the dates—15th to 17th May—and get ready to paint the town tartan.
