A monument commemorating the final resting place of the Russian cruising vessel, the Varyag, which ran aground off the Ayrshire coast
About
Varyag Monument
The vessel became famous for its crew's bravery and defiance after refusing to surrender despite being surrounded by Japanese battleships in the Battle of Chemulpo Bay (1904). After changing hands several times in the intervening years, the Varyag was under German ownership when she ran aground near Lendalfoot, and was scrapped in place.
